Lutheran Foundation awards $150,000 grant to Open Sky Education for wraparound care program
ST. LOUIS, MO --- Open Sky Education has received a $150,000 grant from Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis to help further develop a before- and after-school care program serving the Tower Grove East neighborhood, as well as to explore and facilitate additional educational startups in St. Louis.
Compass Educational Programs will serve families from its location at 2900 S. Grand Boulevard in St. Louis. Compass programs provide families with a high-quality wraparound care option in a safe and loving Christian environment. Compass has two other St. Louis-area locations, one serving the Fox Park neighborhood, and the other serving the Tower Grove South neighborhood.
“Compass Educational Programs provide a Christian wraparound care option for families who want the extra support of a Christian environment that aligns with their own family values,” says Matt Hoehner, executive director of Open Sky Education’s St. Louis Region. “We are seeking to provide this option to the many families who need and desire this type of programming.”
“We view Compass as a unique way to bring Christian education to families who cannot attend a traditional private Christian school,” says Ann Vasquez, President and CEO of Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis. “By supporting options like Compass in our city, we’re meeting families’ needs for support while also providing the Christian education they desire.”
As the grantmaking ministry of 63 St. Louis area Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod congregations, Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis seeks the improved care of people in the greater St. Louis metropolitan region. The Foundation has awarded more than $100 million in the St. Louis area since the inception of its grantmaking program in 1986 in support of its vision of seeing the Church brought into the hurting lives of people and people included in the healing life of the Church. Grants are awarded in the areas of Christian volunteerism, congregation social service outreach, Lutheran education, services for ex-offenders and their families, support for foreign-born populations, and older adults maintaining independence. “Compass has been the best preschool for our son. For the past 2 years we have watched Jon-Nelson grow intellectually, socially and emotionally here. No words can really describe the amount of growth that he has gone through at Compass. From the teachers and principals to the school directors, they each have formed a personal relationship with our son and they are more than just educators but really are part of our son’s extended family. The experience at Compass has been both warm and enriching, and the only sad part is that our son will be leaving to go to Kindergarten at the end of the year. Thank you Compass for being part of the crucial foundation for Jon-Nelson’s life.”

“My daughter thoroughly enjoys her time in her pre-k class. She was a bit timid in the fall, but with the help of her loving, caring teachers, she has really blossomed and grown. It is such a joy to watch her at home counting to 100, working on writing sentences, and actually starting to read! I really believe because of Compass Preschool my daughter is fully prepared to begin kindergarten in the fall, confident and ready to succeed!”

“My daughter's experience at Compass Preschool has been all that I hoped for … AND SO MUCH MORE. When she turned 3-years-old, I could tell that she was ready for preschool, but I was extremely nervous about sending her. I had to return to work, so her days at school would be long. Well, I quickly learned that I had nothing to worry about. The team at Compass Preschool are incredibly talented educators who are dedicated to providing the best learning experience possible for each student.
Along with their hands-on teaching, they also nurture my daughter's emotional and spiritual needs, and I feel those are equally as important. It's an absolute thrill for me to see how much my daughter is learning and how much fun she's having at the same time. She not only looks forward to going to school, she especially looks forward to spending time with her amazing teachers. I feel so very fortunate to have Compass Preschool in our community, and I look forward to sending my other daughter there when she turns 3.”
